Howick Bowling Club – Lawn Bowls in East Auckland

Howick Bowling Club is one of the largest and most successful lawn bowls clubs in Auckland, with over a century of history in the historic village of Howick in East Auckland.

With five greens, free coaching and a welcoming social atmosphere, it caters to everyone — from complete beginners curious to try the game, to competitive players chasing national titles. This page covers what the club offers and how to get involved.

About the Club

Howick Bowling Club has been running for more than 100 years and is regarded as one of the top clubs in the region. It has been named Auckland Bowls Club of the Year three times (2003, 2013 and 2016) and is an Auckland Bowls “Gold Partner”.

The club is a member of Bowls Auckland, the regional governing body, and is also listed with the national body, Bowls New Zealand.

One of its biggest draws is its facilities. The club has five greens — three top-quality natural grass greens and two artificial all-weather greens — which means members can play right through the year, whatever the weather. A new cover over one of the artificial greens is being built to extend all-weather play even further.

Coaching & Getting Started

Howick is a strong choice for anyone wanting to learn or improve.

The club offers free coaching, and — like most New Zealand clubs — provides bowls for newcomers, so you don’t need your own equipment to begin. Flat-soled shoes are generally the only requirement to step onto a green.

Because the club plays year-round across its five greens, there’s flexibility in when you play, and the summer twilight bowls sessions are a relaxed, social way to give the game a go. For players keen to develop further, the club runs an active coaching programme and has experienced coaches involved, with pathways into competitive and representative bowls through Bowls Auckland.

Events & Venue Hire

Beyond regular club play, Howick hosts national and international events thanks to its quality greens and facilities.

The spacious clubhouse and licensed bar are available for one-off or regular daytime bookings, making the club a practical venue for community groups, functions and social events.
